Dear Lauren and dad. You should both feel the same way like me. The reason why is dad Lauren tried her hardest and it's not her fault that she didn't come first. Lauren it's not your fault dad's just trying to be a proud father but he didn't mean to say it that way. I know it hurts you but you should apologise to dad and dad you should apologise to Lauren and say you didn't mean to say it like that.

Day 5: Maintaining the Status Quo (The 1990’s)

Activity 1: Hiking Tongariro

In 1990, one of the largest national parks in New Zealand, Tongariro,
was listed as a World Heritage Site. It is a truly spectacular place to visit!
Thousands of people go to Tongariro every year and hike the
Tongariro Crossing. Visit the Tongariro website to learn more about the
one-day hike.

On your blog tell us what you would need to pack if you were going to
hike the Tongariro Crossing. What should you bring with you? Write a list
of at least 5 items.

Other than making sure that you have the right equipment, what else
should you do before heading out on a big hike? Click here to learn how

1. She was the 37th prime minister in New Zealand
2. She is the 5th longest serving prime minister
3. She was the second woman to hold her position as prime minister.

Bonus Activity: You Have to Pay to Play

In 1990, for the first time in New Zealand’s history, universities and
polytechnics started charging students money to go to school. Prior to
then, it had been free to go to university or to a polytechnic. Since 1990,
students have had to pay thousands of dollars to attend post-secondary
(after high school) education.

The new Labour government have promised to give up to three years of
post-secondary education to all New Zealanders by 2020!

On your blog, tell us what you think. Should students have to pay
money (tuition fees) to go to university? Why or why not?

I think students should not have to pay to go to university because 1
they’ve just gotten out of school and 2 the university should be paying
for it because the kids have no money and have to pay for anything else
that the university says to pay for.

Another World war (1939-1945)

At the end of the 1930s, the world has been shaken once more
by the start of another World War (WWII). World War Two
started on the 1st of September, 1939 when an army from
Germany invaded a country called Poland. Two days later,
England and France declared war on Germany and WWII
began.

Activity 1: An Eventful Experience

WWII was made up of many battles and events.
Follow this link to read more about the timeline of WWII.

Choose two key events and find out some more information
about what happened on those days. On your blog, write a
short summary of two events, including the names of people
involved and where the event happened.

Here are the two key events I chose.

1. On the 3 of December 1942 troops were

sent to New Caledonia. The people who are Involved are
the people in the troops.

2. On the 15th of August

US troops landed at Vella Lavella in the Solomon Islands.
The Solomon Islands are located right next to
Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.

Activity 2 A call to arms:

Over the course of WWII, approximately 140,000
New Zealanders were sent overseas to serve in the war.
Many were sent to fight in huge battles, including the Battle
of the Atlantic that lasted for 2064 days (over 5 years)! The
Battle of the Atlantic came to an end in 1943, in large part due
to the heroic efforts of people like Lloyd Trigg, a pilot from
New Zealand. He was awarded a special medal from the
New Zealand Government for his bravery. It is called a
Victoria Cross (‘VC’ for short). A total of 22 New Zealanders
have been awarded VCs.

Activity 1: The First Settlers

It is truly believed that the first people to arrive in Aotearoa
( New Zealand ) came all the way from Polynesia. Most

historians believed that the Polynesians arrived 700 years ago.

Even though they were from different countries, these people
learnt to live together and formed their own distinct culture

known as ‘Māori.’ Maori have their own traditions, language
and culture.

a special boat called a ‘waka’ to reach New Zealand.
