SLJ Day 2: Forest Life

Hi bloggers sorry this is a late post. Today I will be talking about the big forest among us and even some of Aotearoa's famous sports teams. Continue reading to find out about day 2.

Activity 1: Giants Among Us

New Zealand has a really special environment. Many of the plants and trees found in New Zealand are not found anywhere else in the world. These plants and trees are endemic to our country.  In New Zealand, one of the largest and longest living endemic trees is the NZ Kauri tree. Kauri are mainly found in three regions of New Zealand: the Coromandel, Auckland and Northland. The largest Kauri tree in the country is in the Waipoua Forest in Northland. It is called Tāne Mahuta. Some people refer to it as the ‘Lord of the Forest.’

Thousands of people go to visit Tāne Mahuta every year.

I would love to go on a trip and visit the largest tree in Aotearoa, Tane Mahuta. The reason being is because I love the outdoor nature and this tree is very appealing to me. It would be a great opportunity if I could go there because I would see how tall the tree is in real life, I would also make sure to capture it and post it on my blog to show all of you what I did while I was there. I would also love to walk the waipoua forest kauri tracks to see all the other wonderful Kauri trees there.

Activity 2: Fabulous ferns

One of the most common plants found in New Zealand forests is the fern. It is a special, iconic symbol of New Zealand. You will find pictures of ferns on the jerseys of many famous sporting teams in New Zealand, including the New Zealand All Blacks.

Out of all three of these sports teams I think the team that has the best uniform is the silver ferns. They have the best uniform because you can see the fern a lot more than the All blacks and Black ferns jersey. It also looks great, light and easy to run in while there playing netball. I also really love the black ferns and one day I want to be just like my role model and play rugby for the black ferns. Her name is Fiao'o Fa’amausili. She is a rugby legend and has led the Black ferns to back to back victories ever since she became captain. She is a great leader to her team and is a great sport but most of all she is a kind and caring women who serves her community as a police officer.That’s why I want to be just like her.

Activity 3: Weird and wonderful

New Zealand is just one of many countries that has amazing plants and trees. In fact, the African desert is home to some pretty incredible plants, like the cactus. Some cacti are able to survive on as little as 3 millilitres (ml) of water a day. Wow!

Let’s imagine that you are given a cactus for your birthday. To keep it alive, you must give it 3 ml of water every day.

Over one full year, how much water will you need to give your cactus plant?

Day 1: In The Beginning SLJ

Activity 1: The Legend of New Zealand

Fact #1:

New Zealand was one of the first nations to ever have Universal

Suffrage. Which means New Zealanders were one of the first countries

To not have the right to vote. This is really sad because I think every

Country and every person in the world should have every right to vote. Then in 1893 all male and female citizens were legally allowed to vote.

Fact #2:

Aotearoa was the first country to have there 3 top positions of decisions and power held at the same time by women. The three top positions were Prime Minister Helen Clark, Governor General Dame Silvia Cartwright and the Chief Justice Sian Elias.  This shows that all women and girls can be anything they want if they put their mind to it and work hard.

Fact #3:

Did you know that Gisborne is the first city in the entire world to see the sunrise. That is so amazing because there city is the only city in the world to see the sunrise first. The reason why they see the sunrise first is because they are 496.3 km away from the International date line. That is so amazing!

Activity 2: North and South I live in a beautiful part of the north Island and have an amazing

community in Glen Innes also known as GI. As you can already
probably guess yes I live in Glen Innes. We have lots of farm cattle
down at Pt England reserve and sports fields where we can play
and spend time with our families. We often get lots of opportunities
at school and always take them. I would say we are a spectacular
community and we are unlike others because we share community
events together, have lots of art on the walls that represent our
backrounds and cultures well, and we do lots of sporting events
and exchanges with other schools in our community.

Activity 3: Ice, Ice Baby

This here is my Digital footprint. I have one major tip on being cyber smart and leaving a positive feedback footprint.
Also another way on being positive is always commenting on other learners blogs. That is a great way to stay positive with amazing feedback.

Term 4 reflection

This term and year has been amazing. We did lot’s of fun things and we even got to
go to gravity. I am very sad because this will be my last ever day in extension
and my last week at Pt England school as I’m going to a different school. I have
had so much fun at extension spending time with my friends and learning more.

have had lots of opportunities being in extension and at my school. One of the fun things I got to do was 3d pens. I got to create jewelry using a 3d pen and had lot’s of fun with it. A fun highlight was when all the extension students got to go to the museum ( Talanoa Program ) and learn about the pacific collection. It was so cool. We even got the chance to touch some pacific artifacts, take photos of them and learn more about what they were used for and where they came from.

Another highlight was from 40 hour famine. It was so much fun that we stayed

up till midnight because we played around, played games and had our amazing
concert. I remember my team the yellow team , Jane and Eva winning the
entire concert with our amazing dance.

Finally a highlight I will never forget is the xmas party that we had. We
had so much fun eating, dancing and having fun.

Overall I thought this year was my favourite year of all the time I was at pt England. I had so much fun with all my friends and teachers and I will never forget them.

Term 4 Animation

Walt: To create an animation explaining what happened when cave people were alive


Task description:
In this task the year 6's had to create an animation about cave people. We also had to do a lot of research about the animal we chose. I chose a wild boar because it is a very big animal, and it would be able to feed there entire family. We had to explain in our movie what they had to do to get there food and how they would do it. 

Term 3 Research

Task description:
In this task I had to do research about how parents feel about there children's health. I was in a group with Eva and Zaeeda we were the parents. We had to each create our own DLO about our presentation or we had to make a scratch game. Enjoy.

Warriors Curtain Raisers

When we arrived into the stadium I was feeling really nervous. As we were walking down the stairs, I saw the big field that we were going to play on. My heart was beating so fast, my legs were shaking and I was just so scared.

We finally made it to our seats after a long walk, and we had a great view of the women’s warriors team playing. Our girls team were so happy when we saw the women’s warriors because we saw women that we knew. I saw this one girl and I couldn’t believe my eyes she was a lady who used to play for my rugby club in the women's Marist rugby team. It was the end of the game and the ladies won 32 - 4.

Then we had to start getting ready, the under 13s had just finished playing their game and we started our warm up. We had to copy Roger and Johnny Tuivasa sheck. After that it was game time, the hooters went and the ref blew her whistle. The opposition kicked the ball towards us and it rolled towards me. I was supposed to give the ball and follow the plan but I heard my teacher say run Levonah run.

So I grabbed the ball and ran as fast as I could. First I ran into this little girl and bumped her off as hard as I could, then I stepped another girl and ran so fast like flash. I was so close to the try line and another girl tried to tackle me but I just kept pumping my legs like my coach taught me and I got the ball down onto the tryline. I was so happy because I’ve never ever played on the Mt smart stadium field before and It was a once in a lifetime opportunity so I had to get the try.


The game was nearly over and I really wanted my sister to get a try, so I helped her out and I told her to do our plan liked we practiced. The plan was that she would dummy it to the side that everyone was on and she would run it to the tryline. It was time that she was about to do it. Then she did it and she sprinted to the tryline and got the try. I was so proud because both of us each got a try. Then the hooter blew and it was time.

We were all so happy that we won, but we had to remember to stay humble. We did our cheers, shook hands with the other team and had a photo with them. We went back to our seats and we were talking about our amazing win. We ended up winning 24 - 0.

Finally after all of that it was time for the warriors game. We were all so excited, but in the first five minutes a player from the knights got a try for his team. We were a bit angry but we just kept cheering and cheering for the warriors. “ Let’s go the warriors let’s go” we all said. “Yassss” we screamed Blake green scored the first try. When Blake scored the first try we were hungry so we went for a little break to get something to eat.

As we were ordering the food Shaun Johnson made the kick for his team. We all were eating and David Fusitu’a scored the next try right in front of us. We shouted “ David David” and he waved at us. The cook island drums were playing, so we went in front of it and started dancing. Mr Moran got out his phone and started recording us. Shaun also got his next kick.

The game was nearly finished and Adam Blair got the last try in between the gold post. We all went crazy, we even got a wave from Kalyn Ponga. The final score was 22 - 7.

Overall I thought playing on the Mt smart field was amazing and super fun. Also watching the Women’s Warriors was really inspiring. I had so much fun that night and our team won, the Women’s Warriors won and the Warriors won.

Activity 1: Hiking Tongariro

In 1990, one of the largest national parks in New Zealand, Tongariro,
was listed as a World Heritage Site. It is a truly spectacular place to visit!
Thousands of people go to Tongariro every year and hike the
Tongariro Crossing. Visit the Tongariro website to learn more about the
one-day hike.

On your blog tell us what you would need to pack if you were going to
hike the Tongariro Crossing. What should you bring with you? Write a list
of at least 5 items.

Other than making sure that you have the right equipment, what else
should you do before heading out on a big hike? Click here to learn how

Activity 2: Leading New Zealand

In the 1990s, four different individuals served as the Prime Minister of New Zealand
– Geoffrey Palmer, Mike Moore, Jim Bolger and Jenny Shipley.

Three interesting facts about my chosen Prime Minister:

1. She was the 37th prime minister in New Zealand
2. She is the 5th longest serving prime minister
3. She was the second woman to hold her position as prime minister.

Bonus Activity: You Have to Pay to Play

In 1990, for the first time in New Zealand’s history, universities and
polytechnics started charging students money to go to school. Prior to
then, it had been free to go to university or to a polytechnic. Since 1990,
students have had to pay thousands of dollars to attend post-secondary
(after high school) education.

The new Labour government have promised to give up to three years of
post-secondary education to all New Zealanders by 2020!

On your blog, tell us what you think. Should students have to pay
money (tuition fees) to go to university? Why or why not?

I think students should not have to pay to go to university because 1
they’ve just gotten out of school and 2 the university should be paying
for it because the kids have no money and have to pay for anything else
that the university says to pay for.

Day 4: Perms and Lycra (The 1980’s)

Activity 1: Hairy Maclary

One of the most famous children’s stories to ever come out of New
Zealand, Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy, was written by a kiwi
woman named Lynley Dodd. The book was originally published in 1983.
It is now sold in dozens of countries around the world. It features a
small dog named Hairy.

On your blog, use the following sentence starter from the original book
to finish the story.

To earn full points, your story should have, at least, 8-10 sentences.

“Out of the gate and off for a walk went Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s
Dairy…”

Hairy Maclary walked on the path towards the park. Their he saw his
puppy friends and were playing around. Hairy Maclary was having so
much fun with his puppy friends that they got distracted and ran off.
Hairy Maclary’s owner didn’t know where he went. He shouted out “
Hairy Maclary Hairy Maclary” but there was no sign of him. His owner
looked all over for them so he went back to the house to see If Hairy
Maclary was their. Still no sign of him. He went to the dog park once more
but Hairy Maclary was their. He had one more place in mind his friends
house. He knocked on the door waiting anxiously for someone to open
it. His friend opened it and said your dog followed me and my dog back
home. He said I’m so sorry. After that Hairy Maclary and his owner lived
happily ever after.

That was my story.

Activity 2: The Big ‘OE’

In the 1980s it became increasingly common for students to graduate from high
school and take a year off to travel and experience the world. This year was often
referred to as the ‘Big OE’ or ‘Big Overseas Experience.’ A number of kiwis headed
to places like Australia and England to live and work before returning to New Zealand
to finish their studies. Imagine that you are a student in the 1980s and you’re about to
graduate from high school. Where would you like to go on your big OE? On your blog
tell us which country you would visit and give us three (3) reasons for your choice.
Find some pictures on the internet of things that you would like to see and do in this
country.

The country that I would love to go to would be America.

Reason 1. I would love to go to all the theme parks there

Reason 2. I would love to travel to America and then catch a cruise ship
like the Royal caribbean or the Disney cruise ship.

Reason 3. I would want to go see the Statue of liberty and experience
what it is like.

Those were my reasons why I would love to go to America.

Bonus Activity: The 4 O’Clock News

In 1982, Te Karere, a Māori-language news show premiered on television.
It has continued to stream live on TV to this day. If you would like to
watch it, turn on TV One at 3:55 p.m. each weekday and you will see it.
The show is often hosted by a man named Scotty Morrison.

Imagine that you were Scotty Morrison and you were able to interview
anyone you wanted. I would choose to interview our new prime minister,
Jacinda Ardern. I’d love to know what it is like to be the Prime Minister.  
What about you? Who would you choose to interview and why? What
would you like to find out?

I would also like to Interview Jacinda Ardern because I would want to
find out from her what is it like being a young prime minister and would
you make any more changes in the country. I would also like to ask her
would she choose another job from rather being a prime minister.
